Kritidas for Kriti Das Thokchom

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

To start with, dad calls me inaoba, mom calls me bungo, my other relatives call me damacha or nanao, but I am more often call as Kritidas by my friends and others though I am officially Kriti Das Thokchom. I am not so big or small, again not so fair or dark, not so handsome or ugly; in fact I think I am always in the midway of almost everything. I live in a small locality called Nilakuthi in Imphal, Manipur though I presently stay in Bhopal for studying engineering. Nilakuthi in Imphal is a very nice place with favorable climate. The temperature in the whole of manipur never reaches 35 degree so far. I love my birth place pretty much.

Bhopal, which I am studying in is in the central part of the country. Once the temperature touches 46 degree and I can never forget that day. It is really very hot here in Bhopal. I love playing football. I had gone many times playing football in other collages representing our collage. I love solving puzzles and am very interested in classical mathematics. I love epics like Mahabharata, The lord of the rings etc. And I love making friends with people.

Thokchom

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

So, Thokchom? What is this thokchom? I heard this question a thousand times in my college life. People outside Manipur finds it very hard to accept that Thokchom is a very common manipuri surname in Manipur. Well I belong to a clan called Moirangcha with the surname Thokchom. That makes me think Thokchom is a Great family. Thats my ego actually. Who would say bad words against his own belongings, but thousands and thousands will say good word for their own belongings. Thats what I am trying to do. If you are new to this word called thokchom, learn from now that it is just a surname in a place called Manipur. And also for your information, I don’t know the real meaning of thokchom. I am writing this because I am fed up of answering what is thokchom and what does it means. In fact an interviewer have even asked me to say the meaning of Thokchom. What was I to say than “I don’t know”. And when I told him the truth, he reacted by saying I should at least know the meaning of my own surnames and names. Thats surprising for me and I am still searching for any meaning of it in any available languages in the whole of this world. Anyone can comment here if they want to help me in this small mission.

The Thokchom family

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Doesn’t this sound like a hit movie or a hit novel. Well, its not actually. I am writing here some of my personal informations off the main theme of this blog. So, from where do I start? Let me start from this -that my surname is Thokchom and this Thokchom is a big surname in the whole of Manipur. There are other big surnames too, but still, Thokchom is included among some of the biggest surnames as far as I know. The Thokchom family comes under the Moirang yek or say clan. So Thokchom people are often found refering themselves as Moirangcha- the sons of Moirang. The first person who started to put this surname in his name was a decendent of Moirang clan, and hence Moirangcha. That is the brief history of Thokchom surname.

My village Nilakuthi has a small inhabitant of Thokchom family clustered in the Nilakuthi Maning Leikai. There is an annual meet of the thokchom family in different parts of Manipur. This type of practice is also common in other surnames too. But not all Thokchoms participate in it as again there are hundreds of division in a single surname to make the meet/feast feasible. We call this Chafu Kaiba or chaphu kaiba. I had participated in some of the feast and it is really a very good step taken up by the people of Manipur as it bring together all the brothers and sisters of distant relatives on a single spot on a single day. And every surname family has a puya or holy book which contains all the sons and wifes of every person belonging to the surname. So the ancestry can be easily traced back for anyone who is a Manipuri. Our Thokchom puya contains the brief story of the life of the founder, then his sons and daughter-in-laws and so and so. The only thing which I feel unsatisfied in it is the absence of the names of daughters in the list. But still, the wifes of male members are clearly given with their respective parental surnames. I believe that everyone in Manipur can be made related to each other by compiling all the puyas of every surname in Manipur. And lastly I am proud to be in the Thokchom family or being Moirangcha.

Hi everyone

This is my first post of this blog.  Before I start anything, let me first introduce myself to you all. My name is Kriti Das Thokchom. My hometown is Nilakuthi, in Manipur. Many would say that Nilakuthi is a small village and not even a town. Whatever it is, I stay there. Thats where I live. If you are not familiar with Manipur, it is a small state in the north east reason of India. Manipur is geographically and climatically one of the best place to live in so far as I am concerned. Summer is not so hot there compared with other places of India. It seldom reaches 33 degree even in the hottest day of the year. Again it is not so cold in winter. The high altitude of about 700 meters above sea level may one of the favorable conditions bringing good weather in Manipur.  Well thats how I describe my state. If you go on into my village, you would say it is one of the ancient village that have survived many ages. But truly speaking it was a forest some 200 years ago. My grandfather had settled there just after the second world war.

My grandfather’s name is Borjao. My grandmother’s name is Keinahal. It makes a great combination “Bor-Keina” which means bridegroom and bride in Manipuri language. Unluckily for me, I havn’t seen both of them as they were dead before I was born. I am the second son of My parents Thokchom Lukhoi singh and Laishram Saroja. I have an elder brother named Premsagar Thokchom. I also have a younger sister named Sujata Thokchom. I think thats all for my biodata.
